Which AI is best for Indian small businesses in 2026? I tested Claude, Gemini, Llama and DeepSeek on real desi work

Last month my cousin Rahul, who runs a small furniture showroom in Jaipur, asked me the question every business owner in India is asking right now: "Bhai, which AI should I actually pay for? ChatGPT? Gemini? Everyone says something different."

I didn't want to give him a YouTube-style answer. So I did what I do at work — I took his real tasks and ran them through the main models side by side. Not riddles, not "write a poem about mango". The tasks I tested (and why they matter)

1. A polite but firm reply to a customer whose delivery was late (in English, then in Hinglish).
2. A product description for a 6-seater sheesham dining table — SEO-friendly, 120 words.
3. An email to the CA asking about e-invoicing thresholds — needs to be correct, not creative.
4. A festive Instagram caption with 5 hashtags for a Diwali sale.
5. A quick calculation: margin after 18% GST and 12% marketplace commission.

That's the mix most of us live in. Half communication, some marketing, some maths, and one thing where being wrong is expensive.

What each model was actually good at

Claude (Sonnet 4.5 and Haiku 4.5) was the clear winner on anything a customer would read. The late-delivery reply sounded like a real person from a real shop — apologetic without grovelling, and it offered a small goodwill gesture without me asking. When I asked for Hinglish, it didn't overdo it. The product description read like a good catalogue, not like a keyword dump.

Gemini (Flash and Pro) shone the moment the question depended on current facts. For the e-invoicing threshold, Gemini with web grounding gave me the latest number with a source I could click. Claude and the others gave me a confident answer that was a year old. Lesson: for anything regulatory or "what is the rule now", use a model that can look things up.

DeepSeek R1 got the margin calculation right first time and — this is the part I loved — showed the working. When Rahul's numbers changed, we could see exactly which line moved.

Llama 3.3 and Amazon Nova were perfectly fine for the Instagram caption and quick drafts, and they cost a fraction. If you are generating fifty captions a week, this is your tier.

Mistral Large gave the tightest, most structured answers — great when you want a table or a bulleted policy, less warm for customer messages.

So which one should you pay for?

Honestly? None of them alone. That's the whole point. If you buy only ChatGPT you'll pay ₹1,999 a month and still not have Gemini's live web answers or DeepSeek's step-by-step maths. If you buy only Gemini, your customer emails will sound a bit… Google.

What Rahul now does — and what I do — is keep all of them in one workspace and let Auto decide. My honest recommendation by business type

• Service businesses (CA, consultant, agency): Claude for documents, DeepSeek R1 for anything numeric, and always a web-grounded model for regulations.
• Solo creators: The cheap tier for volume, Claude for the pieces that need to shine.

Three mistakes to avoid

1. Trusting one model for facts that change. Tax rules, prices, laws — use a model that can search.
2. Pasting confidential data anywhere and everywhere. Keep client PAN numbers, bank details and Aadhaar out of prompts. Summarise the document, don't upload the identity.
