What you actually pay when you tap "Subscribe"

DeepSeek V3 and Llama 3.3 were nearly as good as Claude, much faster, and I could generate twenty variants in the time it took Claude to do five. On ChatGPT I'd be using GPT-4o for all twenty, and if I hit the rate limit I'd wait.
Customer service replies (five to ten a day): Claude Sonnet 4.5 is still the best for tone. Someone sends a WhatsApp complaint about a late delivery, Claude writes a reply that's warm, apologetic, and doesn't sound like a bot. Gemini Flash works for simple queries—"Do you deliver to Kisumu?"—and it's faster. GPT-4o sits in the middle: good but not exceptional, and you can't switch to a cheaper model for the easy stuff.
Supplier emails (two or three a week): Claude again. I'm asking for a bulk discount or negotiating a delivery date, and the tone has to be professional without being stiff. Gemini sometimes sounds too casual. GPT-4o is fine, but I prefer Claude's phrasing.
The pattern: if you're stuck with one model, you're using the expensive hammer for every nail. If you have five, you can match the task to the tool and your work gets faster.
When ChatGPT Plus still makes sense
If you're already deep into GPT-4o and you've built custom GPTs or you're using the API for something specific, switching costs time. If you're a developer who needs GPT-4o's exact behaviour for a client project, you're not going to rewrite everything for Claude.
If you only need AI for one thing—say, you're a Nairobi copywriter who writes blog posts for tech startups and GPT-4o is what your clients expect—then paying KSh 1,648 for the tool you know is fine.
But if you're a small business owner, a chama treasurer, or someone running an Instagram shop who needs AI for six different tasks a day, paying more for one model when you could have five for less doesn't make sense. I haven't opened ChatGPT in three weeks.
The hidden cost: what happens when you need image or video
ChatGPT Plus includes DALL·E for images. It's decent for quick mockups—I used it once to visualize a new cushion design—but it's not great for product photography or Instagram posts where the style has to match your brand.
